Most of the time 2 weeks before the season starts. The season starts in the later half of Oct.

Drew, I knew it was only shortly before the season, but did not realize it could be as little as two weeks. Is that fairly standard practice in the CHL? Is that enough time, in your opinion? Could a team decide to start a month before the season or is this regulated by the CHL?

The start of training camp is regulated by the league. The start of camp is usually a Monday, with the day before being the start of physicals etc.
If ice is available and players are in town, teams can make ice time available for the players to have their own "skates", but no coaches can participate. Of course the players do a pretty good job of running their own practices. They know all the basic drills. Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons For you are crunchy and taste good with Ketchup!! |

As Kathy stated very well, this is mandated by the league, much like most leagues.
Do I personally think it is enough? Depends on the team. Teams that keep their core team each season don't probably have much issue with it. Teams that start over for the most part every season do. Part of it though has to do with many players working other jobs, getting visa status, travel time, etc. We can't forget that almost all of these guys have real jobs in the off season and probably make more at those than hockey. Not unlike the old times of the major leagues. Drew |

Cost savings on insurance, meals, apts, rooms. Its a money thing and time saver due to visas. Is it enough? Heck no, we may be ready to play by Thanksgiving and in condition by Christmas. By then we will have traded half the team or they will be riding the pine nursing bruises and cracked ribs. Ah minor league hockey in a black and blue league. Ask the NHLers that played down here and what the refs told them when they complained about rough play and trying to cut the NHLers knees...
I better get busy only a few months to get back into rare form... Best in not enough time to get it straight hockey Westy |

Training camp is for ten days. Some of the players will have been at an
AHL or NHL camp so they are ready to go. Others have practiced on their own at their own expense. But the official CHL training camp is for approximately 10 days. Thanks to Mike B for this info. |
