Obama's 143 Days of Senate Experience

Just how much Senate experience does Barack Obama have in terms of actual work days? Not much.

From the time Barack Obama was sworn in as a United State Senator, to the time he announced he was forming a Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days of experience in the Senate. That's how many days the Senate was actually in session and working.

After 143 days of work experience, Obama believed he was ready to be Commander In Chief, Leader of the Free World, and fill the shoes of Abraham Lincoln, FDR, JFK and Ronald Reagan.

143 days -- I keep leftovers in my refrigerator longer than that.

In contrast, John McCain's 26 years in Congress, 22 years of military service including 1,966 days in captivity as a POW in Hanoi now seem more impressive than ever. At 71, John McCain may just be hitting his stride.

I received this email in response to my cousin's wide spread promotion of his presidential candidate of choice. I thought this lady was very much "right on" by politely telling him to back off his political rhetoric. And, her email says:

Exchanging political views is one of the most important thing a citizen can engage in to protect the Freedom we enjoy in this the greatest Nation ever.

I usually record and watch the Sunday morning Washington news shows. I love to hear what intelligent insiders have to say about candidates and the election. Some times these people astound me with their perception of people and events in the news. Calling Barack Obama, "hussein osama" is next to ghetto and far from the level of engagement of politics I care to take part in. I've often wondered why people who hate him so just don't call him a nigger and be done with it. I think it might impress the black hockey fans who would hang out here.

One of the things I learned from Christ is to not hate. I don't hate anybody. Hussein is his name. I'm conservative, he is a liberal who happens to be black. I don't think he is a "n****r. He is as much white as he is black, making him a mulatto I believe. Some in the black community call him "whitey". Others call him "n****r. For sure he is a lying politician like all of them. that anybody thinks that people can actually talk intelligently about politics without injecting a part of their own views. Those of the media are not without bias since they are being paid for what they do and they have to walk a certain line for those that pay the bills. The point however should be the right to vote and ensuring that you do just that and actually vote. IMO if you don't vote you don't have the right to complain, honestly it's embarrassing at the real percentage of people that actually do and decide for us all. It should be mandatory to vote but that just wouldn't be the American way, were to busy to stand in line for anything except maybe food.

Who people vote for or even campaign for isn't an issue at all for me, I don't pick friends by what party they belong to or church they attend. Remember each of us are:

Who we are
Who we think we are
And who others think we are

Learning the difference between them could very well make us all better....

Same here Joe. Two of my best friends are political activists - one is the head of the local Democratic party, the other was the head of the local Republican party for over 50 years. One is a agnostic, the other a Presbyterian. They were my friends before I ever knew their political and religious beliefs. Neither has ever called me a racist, as I have been called on this board.

In our country those wishing not to vote have that right protected as any other only in a controlled country are citizens forced to vote and generally for a single candidate. Can you say Cuba, old Soviet, new Russia, and latest African elections. I think some are getting it. Our strengths are also our weaknesses. If the bad guys were to get into control they might win the popular elections for Senate, House, President, etc. Just ask an old German what happened after WWI. The trick is education and information followed by conversation and an intelligent electorate. You will find lots of some of this Sunday morning but almost none of a little of it. For me I await the VPs. I believe this will help me see the direction of the race. I fear Mr. Obama might equal Mr. Carter or worse. Most lived through Billy Beer and his sweet female relatives. My Dad survived on the 19 percent interest he locked into his retirement account during the worst US inflation of all times so we will see.

John I understand about freedom of speech and conversation about politics and other things, I also consider many if not all that post here friends. None of which I would call a racist, and certainly if I felt uncomfortable about any situation with one of you I would take it up with that person(s) in a less public manner.

Personally I haven't completely commit-ed to whom I will vote for yet, but I am leaning strongly towards one. I will vote, I will not campaign for since that is a private issue for each person. Remember the same rights apply to all sides......they say we have the right to vote but that isn't true it's actually a privilege simply because it can be taken away, just like your drivers license. It's unfortunate most feel stronger about the later. Diverse opinions and different views is what makes life interesting, what you do with them is what makes you us who we are. Living here in America makes us just that much more fortunate then others.

Maybe some of us should have spoken up before Bush got elected and voiced our opinions. Looks like by his ratings some of us were right about him. He scared me and has proven in my opinion that our elections system is flawed and the right man does not always win by our process. Shrub was not the man we needed. Everyone has a right to their own opinions just some of us respect the others right to have one. We listen and gather the information on our own and not read propoganda on websites that just smear misinformation. We read and listen and make our decisions on our own and what we believe on our own. Just call me liberal. I, personally don't want either one as my president. She did not win the electoral votes to be put on there. Obama, if elected, will have to survive the radicals and rednecks to protect his life. McCain would just have to survive old age and the George Bush syndrome. Neither one is the right candidate for the problems this country has right now.

I think Gina is right on the money with this part of her post. Unfortunately I don't see a real up-and-comer leader for any of the three parties. Certainly no one in the current Congress. Someone told me last night that Moncrief is considering running for the Senate as a democrat. What a dilemma that would pose for some!

Politics and religion discussions always seem to show people's true character. The way we talk about and treat others is more of an indicator of ourselves than those we target.

I know this...the "right" person or persons for the improvement of this nation isn't on this ballot and rarely are on any ballot. The sad truth of this country's political scene is it is very skewed to the wealthy and only is getting worse. Our country was made great on the backs of common men and women that cared more about their fellow man than a party or personal agenda, sadly that is not even close to today's politicians...and IF it is, you will not see that person very long or you will see them change...

At the end of the day, Americans are very poorly educated on political issues...they get their information from radio/tv talk show hosts, 30 sec commercials, email stories that are about 99% wrong and take up valuable bandwidth, and from their friends that know about as much as they do... I would disagree Gary. YouTube and similar video websites are becoming more and more popular to get out a message by politicans. Blogs is another major media outlet that is on the rise. These are today very much part of the media, regardless if they have their own reporters in the traditional sense. Old media is dying off, the ST is a great example of this as they struggle to find the proper balance between print and electronic.

One search on John McCain links me to over 42,000 videos including the #1 video that is on www.johnmccain.com. When you do the same for Obama, you get over 130.000 videos with the #1 on his official website as well. This isn't even mentioning that the candidates have official YouTube channels where they upload campaign updates and information. Some videos have MILLIONS of hits, so obviously many people use this as a media outlet for their information. I see this no different than online TV websites.

I am still interested in your thoughts on McCain and why you feel he or the Republican party is capable of anything conversative these days. Many dyed in the wool Republicans are jumping mad at their party for recent activities and actions not the least of is spending like there is no tomorrow (don't get me started on this country's debt situation).
