A former Dallas police detective with a very special place in history has died. Paul Bentley was one of the officers who arrested Lee Harvey Oswald, the man suspected of killing President John F. Kennedy and patrolman J.D. Tippit on November 22, 1963. |

When he was young, Oswald and his mother lived on the next street from my dad's house. Dad always has said that Oswald was a weird kid. His mother used to
shop in my dad's Safeway store on Camp Bowie and dad has told me stories about her. She had a room dedicated to Lee in her house down around Stripling
Middle School. It was like a shrine to him with every picture, article, etc that was produced about him. She was a nice lady he said, but very disturbed by all
of it.
I used to work with the nephew of the police officer that was escorting Oswald when Ruby shot him. Small world... My dad still to this day says Oswald acted alone...this from his personal interaction with Lee and his family throughout the years... Personally, I think he was a pawn in a much bigger picture, whether or not he actually pulled the trigger is irrelevant, IMO. A funny side note, all of my German colleagues want to go to the 6th floor museum when they come into town...along with South Fork and the Stockyards in FW.... of course, they all like FW much more than Dallas... when you first heard that news?

....I was working in the newsroom of a college radio station when the teletype went wild, bells ringing (they used to do that). 5 bells was a bulletin....UPI
just kept ringing the bells for 10 or 20 rings! When we went on-air and broadcast the news, many people were angry with us, thinking that we were part of a
bad joke.

I was working. We kept on working throughout the entire day. Some co-workers actually cheered when they heard the news. People forget that at that time JFK was
not a popular man in Texas. In fact, the main reason he was here was to try and rebuild his support among Texas democrats. It was even doubtful he would have
been reelected. One deranged killer forever changed history.

I was sitting at my desk in second grade at Glencrest Elementary. I remember someone coming into the room and handed Mrs. Bodine, my teacher, a note. Mrs.
Bodine started crying. I had no idea what was going on. Mrs. Bodine, drying tears from her eyes, told us that our president had died. She spared us youngsters
the fact that he had been shot. Guess she figured it was best we heard what actually happened from our parents. tmk

I was in my office (Oil Field Supply) in Perryton, TX, when someone came with the news. I went home to watch in TV.
In 1938 we moved into the house next door south of what became the Oswald house. Don't know exactly when they moved in. I was long gone. Gary you are correct in saying he had slim chance of being re-elected. With out the shooting, I beleive he would be remembered as just a mediocre President. His personal life makes Bill Clinton look like a choir boy. Surely did change History. Gave us the Long Eared Boy from the Pedernales who got us deeply involved in 2 wars, Vietnam and the War on Poverty. We lost the first ( not in the field) and the other has created a huge army of dependents. What a mess. My solution to the second is to treat welfare folks like working people and make them pass a drug test to get their check. Our drivers must do it in a bottle to continue working. |

I was in the Navy, roughly half way from Midway Island to the Aleutians at probably 12,000 ft, on a radar picket aircraft, EC121. Our mission was to keep a
constant vigil for East bound Russian aircraft and any of their subs. Word came through our radioman via a key code encrypted message from the Commander in
Chief of the Pacific Fleet. We immediately went to our highest alert condition, as if the US had been attacked by Russia.
Back then communications was not what it is today. For you Hams that used the key, our radiomen used stereo headsets that monitored our operational frequency and also the guard frequency, and it all came to him via coded groups of letters and numbers. Unless he copied it all correctly, it didn't decode. When our 14 days of 7 monthly missions was complete, we returned to the main island of Hawaii, Oahu. Once there we lounged on the beach, surfed, played tennis, drank some beer, and chased a few skirts. It was a good life. |

He attend school for a while with me and I saw him at the drug store on West Rosedale upon occasion. His mother came to the drug store daily. She was very
quiet and to her self. The clerks said she brought in lots of pictures to be developed but used an assumed name because some had been stolen while being
developed. They lived a few blocks away for us.
