Who if any will be signed from last year, besides Sterling?
|

Big Slapshot |
good question | ||

And many are wondering the same thing. But looking at who is already signed for some it may only be an invitation to camp for a chance to win a spot. With nine players signed six are "D" men, two RW and one goalie.
The defense is close to being set, we still need a few vets and another goalie. Hopefully a few off of our first and second lines will at least come back for camp. There were some very hard workers last year that IMO would be a good fit, but who knows. We will just have to wait and see what Al can do. |

Good Question | ||

The Brahmas have touted the improvement from last year and staying in the playoff chase until the last few weeks.
Now, with only one returnee from that team....what is the message? Is it no talent or no Sims ? Only Dececco so far to score goals. You are kidding me if Bastien, Paquet, Genesse and Jas are not in the mix. As for the defense being set....I don't believe that either. Willers and Hartinger are good players. Branham is one of top six. Beyond that is Brand (big and slow) and two rookies. Hynes and Davis need to be in the equation somehow, either playing here or traded for players. |

that is why I said "close to being set". Inked contracts with this club normally get a spot. (not always, they are traded at times) Bastien, Paquet, Genesse and Jas would be great additions along with both Davis brothers and Hynes. I wouldn't count on BL I'm sure he'll stay in the AHL.
Last years squad made great progress, but it still wasn't good enough in the long run. All teams try to increase from the prior year and some are successful. We do have to replace the scoring lost by Woollard moving on. We do need to have a power play and penality kill. So far don't see it, but it has potential the rest of the signings an camp tryouts will give us a better clue. But let's not forget half the team is signed already, and we must have a second or first goalie. Not many spots left after filling in the spots. |

Good question, Cowtown. Is it no talent or no Sims? The improvement touted by the club happened in aproximately the first half of the season. The second half was crash and burn. If the talent was there why hasn't the core of that team been signed and then the holes plugged with the Saints players? Does that mean the Saints had better talent than the Brahmas? I'm having a hard time understanding the strategy thus far. Where are Bastien, Paquet, Jas, et al? Coach, you seem to be privy to what's going on. Will any of last year's team be invited to camp or signed? Can you say if the club is talking to them? None have signed with other teams or leagues that I know of.

I have heard that Adam D. has been offered a trade to a Border team and is considering it.

Crashed And Burned | ||

After the loss of a key player (ringer) and a few other unforeseen changes the team bravado and chemistry melted/dissolved. The fact that no leader was brought in or no one there was worthy of the "C" told me by late January it was dumper time. Once the slide began the players fell into the same old ways of losing. It was all over but the shouting. The last game was the same through two periods until someone found his "Balls", excuse me ladies. Just my honest opinion. Finally the answer is there is non among the old team that needs to come back. Most likely they would not sign on. Will wait and see. Playing here except the first 10 games last year has not been fun.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can sign a player you traded away the previous season (a rights issue or something). So I don't think that AA Davis could come back here. I also heard the Adam Davis trade rumor.

Re: Signings | ||

Here is what I will throw out there...
Adam Davis will not be back with FW Sokol has signed in another league. I don't believe it has been announced so I will not state the team yet. Paquet is looking at multiple offers right now both in the US and Europe. Lind has a family situation that will keep him closer to home. I wouldn't rule out Jas, Bastien and Genesse completely as of right now. Don't be so quick on Lundbohm. He hasn't signed in the AHL just yet. Welsh and Carper both retired. Hynes is probably the only defenseman from last season that is still available, but we all know the amount of defense we have signed already, so do you give him a shot or not? I really don't know on this one... I don't see Murphy coming back and not even sure if he will play this season. His injury last season might force him to retire, who knows. Banach's injury revealed some other medical issues that he will have to consider if he plays again, but I heard that was doubtful. Bansner is someone I think we should bring back, but do we need 2 enforcers since we have Silverstone now? Upton is a vet now. The hard question is did he show enough last season to warrant a vet spot this season? I personally love to watch the guy play, but not so sure he is worth the vet spot. Who does that leave left? Udovicvic, no idea. BJ Cotton, never played a min I don't believe. Woollard, he is out. Aaron Davis and Sheldon Nedjelski can not be traded back to FW. You can't be traded back to the team you last played for. They would have to be traded to another team and then from that team back to FW. I am not sure if they actually have to play for that team though, in other words, I don't know if you can just do a 3 team trade thing, I doubt it though. After reading through that, who would you suspect will be asked back? I only see 3-5 players that have the potential to even be asked or will be available. Drew |

Paquet and Lundbohn, if Im a bettin man, and I am, they are history as well.
"Welsh and Carper both retired." Funny thing, I thought Carper retired, oh say, about December of last season. Sure looked that way to me. Talk about an overhyped player, he was supposed to be the player that "solidified" the defense, jeeeeezzzzzzzz, how about the exact opposite. |

Re: Signings | ||

Of last years squad, I would like to see Genesse and Upton back. I dont know if Genesse would be our top line center but he may have that potential. He certainly would be in one of the top two lines. Since the Brahmas dont have any centers under contract Genesse will be a nice fit. I like Uptons work ethic. Hes a solid second line winger. Last season wasnt his best year stats-wise but I saw a lot of things out of him that dont make the stats sheet.
Bastien wasnt much of a factor last season because of his injury and his time in Norway. He and Upton never really had a chance to get that chemistry going they had the previous season. I would be surprised if hes re-signed. Banser settled into an enforcer role last season and I think, even with Silverstone, there is a role for him. Banser also has some skills. The Brahmas have long needed some big physical forwards to clear some room in the offensive zone. Last season, when the Brahmas had Banach, Banser and Udovicic skating, they had a physical presence up front we havent seen in a long time. It was nice to have several guys out there that could clear the ice and punish the opposition. Add Udovicic to the guys Id like to see back list. He could fight and he could score. Hed fill that second or third line center spot nicely. With that, we still need a first line center and a winger to compliment Bret DeCecco. Speaking of DeCecco, I came across this website which maybe of interest: The Bret DeCecco Fan Club website |

Last years squad (start of the season)
1 goalie Dan Murphy (retiring) 2 defense Nate Markus * 3 defense Adam Davis (rumored not to be returning) 4 defense Mark Hynes * 7 defense Sheldon Nedjelski (traded last year can't return) 9 r/wing Derrell Upton * (vet) 10 l/wing Martin Paquet *(multiple offers) 14 l/wing Jay Banach (medical issues) 15 center Bryan Lundbohm (not likely) 16 center Lonny Bohonos (not likely) 17 forward Brain Banser * 18 defense Jorin Welsh (fireman, won't return) 19 l/wing Chad Woollard (gone) 21 center Aaron Davis (traded last year can't return) 25 r/wing Nick Udovicic * 35 goalie Larry Sterling (signed already) 37 defense Brad Lukowich (NHL) 57 defense Dave Csumrik * (7) defense, (5) wings, (3) centers, (2) goalies, (1) forward Looking at what positions AL filled last year let's see what we have so far: Defense (7) 1. Brand 2. Hartinger 3. Coutu 4. Branham 5. Willers 6. Coughlin 7. open Wings (5) 1. Dececco 2. Silverstone 3. open 4. open 5. open Centers (3) 1. open 2. open 3. open Goalies (2) 1. Sterling 2. open Forward (1) 1. open OK now the rest of the guys that were here is as follows: (don't think I missed anybody) Bastien (c) Bull (c) Carper (D)........retired (Drew) Cotton (G)........still in college, local, no chance Edwards (D) Genesse (F) Jas (F) Lind (D)...........will not return, family situation (Drew) Lyke (D)...........Austin has rights (Drew) Seal (F) Sokol (F)...........signing with another league (Drew) Out of those listed above (others) who if any would you like to see return? End of season numbers according to pointstreak: Defense (7), Wingers (7), Forwards (7), Goalies (3) (injuries account for larger number) (notice zero centers) |

OK, I included the season ending numbers also above. I was going to plug in the names but didn't want to confuse people. Notice call ups and trades left us with no center's.

Re: here's what you asked for | ||

Centers and Wings are sometimes listed as forwards. I wouldn't go completely by Pointstreak.
Genesse and Bastien are both centers. Whether or not they were always playing as centers is another story, although I think that is all Genesse played. I believe that Jas played some center also in the late season... You are right though that losing Lundbohm and AA Davis hurt us in the middle... Drew |
|||
Chuckapuck |
Speaking of centers | ||
|
I hate to oversell the importance of a good center, because all the positions on the ice are important. But center is a tough position to play because it calls on all the skills. Besides the obvious of winning face offs and scoring goals, a center has to see the ice, be a good skater, passer and have good defensive skills. A good center will make his wingers better. We saw the chemistry that Upton and Bastien once had. Also, I dont think it was coincidence that Woolards and Paquets point production fell when Lonny Bohonos and Bryan Ludbohm left the team. Last season after we lost Ludbohm the top line center position was up for grabs and none of the existing players could solidly claim it. AA Davis and Beniot Genesse came the closest. Of the players available from last years squad signing Genesse should be a top priority (even if we can sign a center of Ludbohms caliber).

I agree good centers are a must and it did show the first part of the season last year. And when BL passed he sent the puck to where the player was supposed to be, it was up to him to get there. More was expected and production was up.
Out of this group IMO: Bastien (C)....sign him Bull (C).........camp Carper (D).....(retired) Cotton (G).....still in college Edwards (D)...no only played one game here Genesse (F)...sign him Jas (F)..........sign him Lind (D).........will not return, family situation (Drew) Lyke (D)........Austin has rights (Drew) Seal (F).........camp Sokol (F)........signing with another league (Drew) another good goalie is a must..... |

Quote: Just a few comments... Carper is retired from what I was told. Who is Edwards? I remember he played fill in one game last season when I believe it was Welsh that went to the Fire Academy... Lind is not going to come back. He has a family situation that will keep him closer to home. Lyke's rights lie with Austin I believe, we released him... Sokol is going to be playing in a different league and may have already signed... I don't see Cotton even getting a camp spot... Drew |
