| Monster deal sends Bearcats Gvora to Alberta

Vern Ray has started the Superior International Junior Hockey League pre-season off with a bang. The veteran coach, who took over the reins of the Thunder Bay Bearcats during the off-season, has traded former Mississauga Ice Dog Justin Gvora to a junior team in Alberta, in return for five unnamed prospects, a player to be named later and cash. Gvora, who played 38 games with the Ice Dogs in 2005-06, had 43 goals and 64 assists to lead the Bearcats in scoring last year, a campaign that saw him suit up for Canada West at the World Junior A Hockey Championship in Yorkton, Sask. The deal was made Aug. 14. |

As a new fan to hockey during the last phases of the Fire, I attended a post game function where the players would be in attendance. In a shy way I approached
and spoke with Vern "the Chief" Ray. He was very laid back and open. Seemed to sense my shyness and talked to me as though we had known each other
for years. He is just one of the players from that old Fire team that endeared my to the sport and its players. I'm glad he is doing well.
